Item Description from Seller

Vintage Sterling Skull Ring — Fred Harvey Era Style — Bell Trading Post Look — Size 10.5

Authenticity note: This ring is not hallmarked, so I’m selling it as “in the style of” a 1940s–1950s Bell Trading Post skull ring. The design, construction, and age wear appear essentially correct for the period, but please review photos closely and judge for yourself.

Item Details

• Metal: Sterling silver (tests positive)

• Size: 10.5 (approx.)

• Era/Style: Mid-century, Fred Harvey–era Southwestern tourist jewelry style

• Hallmarks: None visible

• Condition: Vintage pre-owned with honest wear—surface marks, small scratches, and natural dark patina in the recesses that highlights the skull details. No cracks or repairs observed. Can be polished on request, but I’ve left the patina intact for authenticity.

Why it’s special

This classic skull motif became a cult favorite among travelers and servicemen passing through the Southwest in the mid-20th century. The proportions of the cranium, sunken eyes, and grinning teeth echo the Bell Trading Post rings that bikers and GIs picked up along Route 66. Even without a hallmark, the silhouette and period workmanship nail the vibe.

A bit of history (for the collectors)

• Bell Trading Post (est. 1930s, Albuquerque, NM): One of the best-known Southwestern outfitters, Bell supplied curio shops and roadside stands along Route 66 with silver and nickel-silver jewelry featuring arrows, thunderbirds, snakes—and the occasional skull. Pieces were made for the tourist market, ranging from hand-worked sterling to cast shop pieces, and many carried the familiar bell hallmark (this ring does not).

• Fred Harvey Era (roughly 1890s–1940s): Named for the hospitality/railroad impresario whose Harvey House restaurants and curio counters popularized Native American–style jewelry to train travelers. The look—stamped arrows, scalloped bezels, turquoise, and bold figural designs—became the blueprint for mid-century Southwestern “tourist” pieces.

• “Old Pawn” Jewelry: At trading posts, Native silversmiths and local families often pawned silver/turquoise items for short-term loans; those unredeemed over time entered the resale market with deep patina and real trail-worn character. While this ring reads “tourist trade/curio” rather than ceremonial, it carries the same rugged aesthetic that collectors associate with old pawn.

Notes on authenticity

Because there’s no hallmark, I am listing this as “vintage sterling skull ring, Bell Trading Post style.” Many period shop pieces were unmarked or lost stamps over time; others were produced by contemporaneous Southwestern makers in nearly identical patterns. Please rely on the photos and your expertise.
