HISTORY / BIO
The El Navajo Hotel opened in 1918 and became one of the signature stops along the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. It was part of the Fred Harvey system, known for shaping early Southwestern tourism through hotels, restaurants, Native arts programs, and rail hospitality.
Gallup was widely marketed as “The Heart of the Indian Empire,” reflecting how the railroad industry promoted Navajo and Pueblo culture to American travelers. Few pieces of printed material from this era survive in clean condition, making this brochure a desirable historic artifact.
