📌 Context
This postcard is a product of the Detroit Publishing Company, a major American publisher of postcards and photographic prints active from the late 19th century into the early 20th century. The “PHOSTINT” trademark refers to a high-quality color printing process (a form of chromolithography) utilized by the company, especially prevalent from approximately 1908 to 1924. The divided back, with separate spaces for the message and address, confirms it was printed after March 1, 1907, when the U.S. Post Office permitted this format.
The card features a description of Taos Pueblo in New Mexico, highlighting its unique architectural style with multi-story communal dwellings, its population, geographical setting, and an annual religious festival on September 30th. Taos Pueblo is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America. The card is in “mint” condition as it remains unwritten and unsent, without a stamp or postmark. The numbers “79101” and “III X” are likely catalog or production codes used by the publisher.
