Item Description from Seller
Santa Fe Warbonnet Streamliner Train in Cajon Pass Postcard 1953 – Fred Harvey
From the back of the card:
“Santa Fe Streamliner In Cajon Pass
Cajon Pass at the summit of the Coast Range is the Santa Fe’s Gateway to Southern California. In the descent, tracks drop 2700 feet in 25 miles.”
“Fred Harvey Hotels – Shops – Restaurants”
“Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona”
In the 1950s, the Fred Harvey Company (which ran the Santa Fe Railway’s hotels, restaurants, and shops) commissioned Curt Teich to print postcard sets featuring Santa Fe trains in their famous Warbonnet paint scheme. These cards were distributed widely through Harvey House gift shops, Santa Fe dining cars, and Fred Harvey hotels — especially the El Tovar Hotel at the Grand Canyon, which was the Santa Fe’s crown jewel tourist destination.
The “Grand Canyon National Park” line you see on the backs wasn’t meant to identify the photo location, but rather to brand the entire series with the Santa Fe’s premier attraction. For decades, the Santa Fe heavily marketed itself as “The Way to the Grand Canyon” and even built the spur line directly to the park.
